Sun has stayed clear of really making money off their software ideas, tending to give them away to public domain: RFS, RPC, NIS, NIS+, and now Java to name a few. Sun is a hardware company. Companies such as MSFT though, have capitilized on the tech foundations they've built. They have every conceivable type of software for sale from games to database engines and probably the best desktop office software.
