THey have you in the palm of their hand! But the army of Net-enabled devices took backstage to
Medanich's demonstration of the Palm VII, which is
currently in field testing. No larger than the Palm III, it offers
Net access thanks to a small attached modem and antenna.
Connectivity will be provided by BellSouth's wireless
network, available in about 250 cities, or about 90 percent of
the U.S. urban population.

But the Net functionality is limited — only Web sites
specifically engineered for the Palm will be viewable. (“You
can't surf with it,” Medanich said.) The Palm VII will ship
with 22 partner sites, including Travelocity's airline
information, eTak's traffic information, and Yahoo's People
Finder. And the Palm won't hook into your existing e-mail;
instead, it has a “messaging service,” which acts more like a
sophisticated two-way pager.
It does have a “know where you are” feature, useful for
divining traffic information. The unit can determine the ZIP
code of the nearest wireless base station and then return data
on traffic conditions for all nearby roads.
