How does SpeecHTML work? What is SpeecHTML? Why do I need it? How does it work? How much does it cost? Setting up the service You will use the SpeecHTML administration website to register your own website, giving some useful information like who you are, the address of your website and some configuration options. Once your site is registered, you will receive a specific telephone number which will connect callers to your website. You can then advertise this number on your literature as an "Information line", "Care line", "Order line", "Booking line" etc. depending on how you intend to use it. Accessing information When your customer calls the appropriate number, this call connects them to the SpeecHTML gateway, which creates a link to your website. Data at your site, encoded in standard HTML, is accessed and retrieved. The text to speech element then converts it to speech, which is sent down the telephone to provide the information required by the caller. If a page has hyperlinks to further information, these will be presented as choices to the caller, the speech recognition engine will interpret what the caller asks for and the new web page will be accessed and read out. If a page contains a form, the caller will be prompted for the information to fill in the gaps. The advanced speech recognition engine will recognise what the caller says and they will be able to submit the information. In this way, ordering or booking can be automated, or specific information such as timetables or sports scores can be requested.

Estate Agents This demonstration shows how SpeecHTML can be used as an information service, mainly for out of hours callers. The system will ask you for a number of details concerning your preference of house, such as an upper price limit, and the number of bedrooms, which it then matches to the properties available. Recruitment Agency This demonstration shows how same information which is displayed on a website can be used as the basis for a "job information line". The system will ask you what category of job you are interested in, and will then present the jobs available in that category. Horoscopes This demonstration shows how information which is regularly updated can be offered over the telephone simply by updating web pages, instead of having to be re-recorded each week. Football Results This demonstration shows how SpeecHTML can be used as an information service. The system will ask you the name of the football club you are interested in: the options are the teams in the UK premier division. Golf Club This demonstration shows how a graphic rich website can be used to provide a telephone-based service. The system will give you information about the club, the course and competition results, and will allow you to book tees. Product Information This demonstration shows how a website which is used to offer product information can also be accessed over the telephone.
