John, I am no position to judge the absurdity of the particular claim. I will say it is normal to have to deal with the enemies ruses. However, it still sounds bad to me...

The F-16 was 50 (fifty) kilometers NORTH of Sofia, Bulgaria. If you look at the map, that is near the Danube and the Romanian-Bulgarian border.

In the vicinity there is a Chernobyl nuclear copycat at Kozludoy that has been leaking for years (Western European countries tried to have it closed for years without much success because of money). If a "smart" missile - forget about smart NATO commanders in the present Balkan War!- hits the reactor by mistake ... bye-bye Southeastern Europe, Danube (over 800 miles) and the Black Sea.

John,
here is the stratfor take on the Harm missile.

Apparently NATO was well into Bulgarian airspace when it was fired...
