Just one more Kosovar aid post today: The update sent out to our list, for anyone here who wants to help or be on the list, write: K_refugees@hotmail.com The update, quoted: MSNBC online: REFUGEES: Up to 5,000 new refugees from Kosovo arrived in Macedonia and were taken to an unfinished refugee camp with no sanitation and told to sleep under plastic sheets because there was nowhere to house them. I honestly cannot remember what I've written today, as I've sent out several notes, but Fred has joined our list to be updated. Fred is a good friend of both Dana's and mine. Dana and Peggy are to meet this afternoon. Peggy, I hope you'll be able to give us a firmer idea of what kinds of contributions to expect and whether they'll be there in a few days, in case we need to order anything. I hope also that you'll be able to find someone who will volunteer some time to check things out, as we are really short on man/lady hours. The newest word from Eddie at TV ERA is that a laptop for the TV station would be a wonderful contribution. Most of you received a copy of his letter, and they do badly need a computer - at least one. They are apparently the prime spokespeople on behalf of the refugees in Skopje. According to Fane Lozeman, Dana and Dusty may mostly be needed to help handle the housing for the 250,000 (I BELIEVE that number is correct but am not positive) who are OUTSIDE the camps, in Skopje. Small houses, according to Fane, are holding 50-60 people. Fane says supplies are now coming in and that supplies to keep the TV station and cash are most essential. Eddie, however, tells us they need all kinds of food. Food, unfortunately, is heavy. Dusty mentioned this morning that if flour, sugar, etc. are needed they should be bought in Greece and brought up. That seems a sound idea to me. If our guys can get the use of a truck, Thessaloniki is only 3.5 hours away, so there must be a closer Greek town where such things can be bought. We will just have to watch out for jacked up prices. Dusty is getting a low-fare Air Canada ticket through a friend but is unable to get a second one for such a low price, so he and Dana will be flying separately. Dusty and I talked this morning of having him go on over earlier to get things started. Dana has to wait for his passport, and we have to wait for our donations to arrive. (We HOPE.) I still don't have anything firm on Dana's ticket. Anthony Elgindy's Dad's agency gave me a price of $999, but I do think that's too high. Everyone insists we use the Zurich route and take Olympic for the Zurich-Skopje leg. Dana has found a fantastic deal on the space blankets (Fred, if you don't know what these are, they are 2-oz. foil-like water-repellent "blankets" sold in army-nave stores for $4). Dana has found someone in Canada who will sell them for 88 cents each plus shipping to Alabama. If we can come up with the cash, I would suggest we order a case (480) of them immediately. HOWEVER, we should find out the difference in cost in having them shipped straight to the Mother Theresa organization in Skopje, unless it takes too long. Could someone look into that - Dana might send the contact info back - or someone else, since Dana is getting ready to leave for Peggy's in Huntsville. More later - We need help! Lisa
