I think you are right and that a classy person really deserves a classy gin.

Quite unexpectedly I had the chance this evening to check out some of my convictions about gin.

We went to a cocktail buffet and there on the drinks table was a 1.75 litre unopened bottle of Tanqueray, which I opened. I poured some over ice and added a lemon twist. Good. After a while I decided to convert what was left to a minimartini with a splash of Martini and Rossi. Not nearly so good.

I now must admit that my favorite dry vermouth is something called Gumbarelli (Gumbarelli & something). It costs half as much as M&R or Cinzano vermouth and I like it better.

I hold to my formula for a martini. Use the cheapest available gin, Gumbarelli vermouth, and a really high-class olive. And when fate brings a really good gin your way, don't louse it up with additives.
