I don't think the Iranians decided anything. I think the crazy old Ayatollah imposed his twisted view of society on them and put the religious nuts in charge. Women and children have been murdered for crimes of dressing wrong. Its not as bad as Afghanistan, but it is very backward. I know many decent, educated Iranians (and a few Afghanistani's) who have had to leave and stay away, and are becoming Americans. The miracle is that so many people (many of them quite strange to previously settled Americans) can fit into and become American. We too naturally assume that because the ones we know can so can everyone in situ. It isn't so. It took Europe 200 years to recognize some of great ideas of personal freedom and self-government that Americans helped pioneer.

This country was formerly a collection of colonies, too.

Real simple difference. We didn't conquer the natives, putting them to work for us, killing their leaders, extinguishing any form of organizational capacity, rob the place blind until we could steal no more, then waltz off, dumping the leftovers in the native laps and expecting them to manage it properly. We just wiped most of them out, corralled the remainder, and took over.

That's why the values are different.
