Verrry carefully. <g> I generally try to determine how the pace of the race will unfold and then look for ponies with the "class" and current form to go a given distance. I believe most (I know I do) handicappers begin by eliminating horses. (Doesn't appear to like the distance, hasn't beaten quality competition, hasn't been working well in the morning, etc.) Final factor is what price is available. So, even if I think a 5-1 shot may be a bit better than a 14-1 horse, I'd opt for the larger payoff. Very simplistic explanation, as there are many other variables, many of which are permanently imbedded in one's brain over years of playing the ponies.
