"Modern usage"? "Broadened"? Not our Chuzzlewit, surely! Say it ain't so, Chuzz!

I am not sticky about much, but I am sticky about rhetoric. It's not just rhetorical to me!

I think that in modern usage the term ad hominem has been broadened to include
insults and otherwise gratuitous characterizations.

My dinky office dictionary defines it as "1. appealing to one's prejudice, emotions, or special interests rather than to one's reason. 2. attacking an opponent's character rather than answering an argument."
