No, WCOM would still have the backbone. Broadband is a medium to a branch of the backbone. It does not threaten the backbone
Shifting topic a little. I've wondered much about whether @home might someday be heading into a space where WCOM is a major factor. I'd love feedback here:
I have a 56k modem. There are many times when I cannot get the full connection speed (usually 46.6k) for anything other than short bursts. Is it the web site, the net itself, or the isp? Dunno, but its not the "last mile" of my modem link. My experiments tend to point to congestion in the internet itself.
The biggest advantage I see in @home is the national broadband network. If stuff is generated by an @home server to an @home customer I assume (not sure)it bypasses the internet backbone altogether. Guaranteed clean broadband service, not a trivial thing I think people will discover as streaming video is common on the net. @home gets a great position as a broadband host. Who does this hurt? WCOM? Maybe.
Feedback? Frank?
