application functioning without the backend mean nothing...I need the data simple concept.. no relevant data...who cares...! there is nothing that also forces you to not have the appsever and the Database server running on the same large box communicating over the backplane other than MSFT marketing bullshit since they are trying to find a place for NT in the enterprise. For example in case of Tuxedo app server they even recommend that to run on the same machine as your backend when it can handle it..remember you are doing all of these mostly because PCs and fat clients in generally too expensive to maintain and roll out. Using the distributed component is also about ease of maintenance, interoperability and short time to market for development. let me make it easy for you...what is your opinion on DCOM..since that is where you are going...
