You are right.
An argumentum ad hominemcan be either an appeal to feelings or prejudices of the hearer, or an argument relying on personal abuse, an attack on his character rather than his viewpoint. There would have to be some viewpoint present.

I found a list of these different argumenti. I hadn't realized how many there were!

argumentum ad crumenam ("argument to the purse")-appeal to financial interests

argumentum ad ignorantiam - argument founded on the ignorance of the opponent

argumentum ad invidiam- appeal to prejudices

argumentum ad judicium--appeal to common sense

argumentum ad misericordiam--appeal to pity

argumentum ad rem --argument to the real issue!!!

argumentum ad verecundiam appeal to awe or reverence toward prestigious name

argumentum ad baculinum --argument of the stick--- force

argumentum per impossibile proof from the absurdity of a contradictory supposition

Blue, in the strictest sense you are absolutely correct, but frequently parts of syllogisms are omitted and left to the listener to supply. You will find this device used all the time. The basic argument is :

"You can't you believe so and so because he is [insert pejorative image here]". The argument is often shortened by simply stating the pejorative, as in:

"Communist!" or "Nazi!" or "you are only worthy to kiss my ass" or some such form with the "you can't believe so and so because he is" understood.

I do not engage people who resort to those shoddy tactics. They are sure signs of logical bankruptcy and further debate or discussion is pointless.
