Any significance to the contact being someone at MSU instead of their current stock promoter (or whatever the PR company is called)?

I think Malcolm is in charge of promoting product sales, not stock.

And PLR definitely doesn't seem to merit the occupational description of "stock promoter".

Not from what I've seen of their performance since September.... <vbg>
