Steve,
I think the concept of "retrofiting" a small typable device (two-way pager) for stock trading is going to have a lot of tradeoffs versus a totally dedicated handheld market trading machine. I am not aware of any company which is developing such device but I'm sure this idea is not a new one. As we evolve rapidly from trading via a traditional broker to telephone touchtone order entry to internet entry to a fixed location high-speed dedicated order entry system, the next logical progression is to go the mobile way so one is totally free (sure can imagine the commercials here...).

Companies that participate in this future space will be the broker itself, the device maker with the software and the wireless communication companies (including those of the paging, mobile and satellite companies). I think the sure winner will be the broker because they are the originator of all traffic. The device makers will face plenty of competitions (in a steady state growth scenario we may have a situation like the Erikson, Motorola and Nokia fights). But whoever is first in the market with the device can make tons of money and retire if they want. Maybe a 6 months leads anyway. The transmission companies will not be a full play because this will likely take up only a portion of their total bandwidth.

Did you know RIMM is going to be the Business writeup for next week? I thought the internet issue won't come out until after market close. Did you buy RIMM after the market close <GG>??

RIMM
Far be it from me to discount the advantages of first to market or price leadership, but one shouldn't just write off 3COM's Palm VII either.
palm.com
The Palm OS is VERY popular and 3COM has a top tier marketing and distribution networks in place. Seems like a Samson and Goliath scenario set up to me. I wonder if the same data providers will be available to both formats.
Unfortunately, commercial success for the Palm VII wouldn't be nearly as highly leveraged as RIMM's gadget.
