Here is an EDIG overview straight from www.edig.com:

e.Digital Corporation Provides Audio Industry with Patented Solutions for Portable Recorder/Internet Connectivity

STRATEGIC OVERVIEW

e.Digital, based in San Diego, California, offers custom product design and manufacturing services to its OEM customers and licenses its line of patented hardware and software technologies for use in a wide variety of handheld devices. Currently, the company is developing products for Lanier Worldwide, Inc., and Intel Corporation. e.Digital has also developed a prototype of a solid-state music player for Lucent Technologies. The company is an innovator in utilizing flash memory for digital voice, audio, image, video and data recording, storage, computer interface and playback. e.Digital's specialty is developing computer-compatible OEM products utilizing its patented MicroOS™ flash memory file management system.

e.Digital Corporation provides turnkey solutions for major OEM's connecting portable digital recording devices to the Internet and local networks. Commencing in 1993, its engineering group has led the conversion of audio signals from analog to digital, created a new class of digital-memory-based consumer products, and completed successful projects linking handheld audio recorders to the PC and the Internet.

INNOVATIONS

The company has a record of innovation in its field. e.Digital Corporation was the first to:

Use Flash memory in a handheld voice recording device
Use removable digital recording media in a handheld device
Interface a portable voice recorder with a PC and the Internet using removable storage media
Record and play back CD quality music using CompactFlash™ storage media

PATENTS

The company has been granted five patents on its handheld recording systems, with additional patents pending. The current patents cover both hardware and software developed by the company. Patent-protected intellectual property includes handheld recording devices, e.Digital's MicroOS file management system, the use of removable flash memory cartridges in a handheld device, and their streamlined methods for recording and editing files in portable systems where memory is at a premium.

THE MicroOS™ FILE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

MicroOS is a full-featured file management system that takes a very small amount of memory. It is best suited for use in handheld products needing small but powerful embedded systems. MicroOS allows for increased audio resolution and simple editing and file management. It is ideal for applications ranging from dictation and voice memos to CD-quality stereo music (see "MicroOS Audio" below). MicroOS can be applied in a wide range of devices using ATA- or IDE- compatible memory, and is particularly well suited for use with flash memory.

MicroOS™ AUDIO

e.Digital has developed a version of its MicroOS file management system specially adapted for use with larger music files. The company has incorporated MicroOS Audio into a portable CD quality music player and recorder that includes a PC interface. This system is targeted at the emerging market for online music sales over the Internet.

EXISTING CUSTOMERS

e.Digital has developed an advanced portable digital voice recorder and computer docking station for Lanier Worldwide Inc., a $1.6 billion subsidiary of Harris Corp. Shipments of the product, which are part of Lanier's "Cquence Mobile/VoiceWrite" medical document management system, are expected to begin in Calendar 1999 Q1.

e.Digital was selected by Intel to design and prototype a number of portable digital voice recorders utilizing advanced speech-to-text and text-to-speech technologies. Intel plans to sub-license the reference design created by e.Digital to Intel's OEM customers, referring them back to e.Digital for licensing and any additional design work required. The prototypes are expected to be complete by mid year 1999.

The company has an ongoing contract with Adamlab--a subsidiary of Wayne County, Michigan, Regional Educational Service Agency--to provide voice recorder daughter boards for Adamlab's SuperHawk Voice Output Communication Aid (VOCA). VOCA is a computer system designed to aid speech-impaired students, both children and adults.

TARGETED CUSTOMERS

e.Digital uses its internal sales and marketing force to target a small number of large manufacturers. Current targeted OEM customers are: dictation equipment manufacturers; Internet music providers; digital camera developers; developers of music compression technology; and developers of portable music devices and other portable products (i.e. cell phones, handheld PC's, etc.)
---------------------------

(I might be dreaming, but I will never forget Andrea Electronics' huge run up in the early 90's, due to noise cancellation algorithms for telephone receivers. EDIG gives me the same feeling, so I bought in at 2.)
