Time Warner Telecom and Alcatel Sign Contracts For Comprehensive Network Solutions; Alcatel Selected for Key Dallas Market Build-out PLANO, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 3, 1999--Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) and Time Warner Telecom today signed a new general purchase and transport contract covering a full range of telecommunication products and services. The companies also announced that Time Warner Telecom will use Alcatel equipment in its planned entry into the Dallas market during the third quarter of 1999. The agreements allow Time Warner Telecom to leverage Alcatel's network solutions, while increasing its network for offering facilities-based services to an expanding customer base. Time Warner Telecom's state-of-the-art network delivers a service bundle, including voice, data and Internet solutions. A wide variety of medium to large business customers and other carriers use services from Time Warner Telecom, one of the nation's leading competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs). "We are pleased to have reached this important stage in our on-going relationship. Having successfully completed lab trials, we now look forward to providing equipment and support services for the planned Dallas market build-out," said Krish Prabhu, CEO of Alcatel USA. "Alcatel's full array of access, transmission, network management and optical networking solutions, coupled with ongoing feature development provide a solid platform as Time Warner Telecom expands their already impressive customer base." Alcatel's family of SONET transmission products, digital cross connects, and network management platform are available to Time Warner Telecom under these contracts. The agreement allows Time Warner Telecom to utilize Optinex(TM), Alcatel's new generation of networking products. Its integral optical networking elements include the Alcatel1610 OA (optical amplifier), the Alcatel1640 OADM (optical add/drop multiplexer) and metropolitan dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) systems. Product Solution Description The following products comprise the network solution Alcatel provides Time Warner Telecom. -- Alcatel's 1648 SONET Multiplexer (SM) will be utilized to provide OC-48 transport for a variety of high bandwidth channels. Its flexible system architecture supports the industries' widest variety of configurations and network architectures including high-speed metropolitan rings, which enable rapid deployment of high bandwidth services. Additionally, this system can be upgraded from one network architecture to another on an in-service basis. -- Time Warner Telecom will be deploying the Alcatel 1631 SX LMC, a second-generation wideband digital cross connect combining optical and electrical interfaces into one flexible platform. The Alcatel 1631 is line and ring capable allowing it to be a node on the network's optical rings. Alcatel leveraged its existing knowledge of SONET optical add/drop multiplexers into the design on the Universal I/O bay to provide full-featured optical line and ring capabilities on the Alcatel 1631 SX LMC. -- The Alcatel1603 SM is a third generation SONET access multiplexer that redefines the meaning of network flexibility, efficiency and reliability. Its innovative design opens new opportunities for network planning and operation and provides a cost-effective solution for the many challenges encountered in today's access environment. -- Alcatel's 1320 NM network management platform will play a key role through a tight integration into Time Warner Telecom's OSI system. The Alcatel 1320 NM is an object oriented, open architecture system for managing services across a multiple technology network. The Alcatel 1320 NM can be integrated into the OSI system to seamlessly handle the complex back-office requirement so critical to CLECs.
