Post Scriptum: Have a look at the Yahoo board. Houston TV reported as saying that 250-300 lay-offs from COMPAQ in Houston this weekend. If part of the planned 15,000 from the DEC merger or what rudedog termed an "additional" 1,500 announced at the time of earnings - no problem. If new and unexpected (which one poster says) then this will mean more one-time charges, some initial confused sentiment (maybe one of the reasons for the sell-off on Friday) but ultimately positive reaction from Wall Street on the grounds that the Board is cutting fat.

If new and unplanned, then I would have thought the Company should have made a formal announcement. So be cautious in interpreting it!
