Comark/DIVI partnership looking good. WebTV Network(TM) Users Spend More Time and Money Online Santa Monica, CA, April 26, 1999-WebTV Network(TM) subscribers are spending more time online and are making more online purchases than the average Internet user. These dramatic conclusions are included in an exclusive survey of WebTV Network(TM)users conducted by TV Online magazine, the nation's only entertainment magazine to cover Internet television. The survey finds that a staggering 49 percent of WebTV Network(TM) subscribers have purchased a service or product online in the past 12 months. By comparison, a 1998 Pew Research Center poll found that only 32 percent of Internet users had ever purchased goods or services online. Additionally, the TV Online survey concludes that the average WebTV Network(TM)user spends 14.6 hours a week online, or 2.1 hours a day. A previous poll by IntelliQuest Research, meanwhile, found that the average Internet user spent only 1.7 hours a day online. “The results of our survey are significant because it undercuts the perception that all TV viewers are passive couch potatoes,” said Phillip Swann, vice president/publisher/editor of TV Online. “WebTV Network(TM)users, the first group in this country to surf the Net on TV, are ready to buy and are curious to learn.” What are they curious about? Entertainment web sites led the way in the survey, with 57 percent of WebTV Network(TM)customers saying they have surfed at least one entertainment site in the past month. Weather sites ranked second with 56 percent, while news-related sites was third with 53 percent. The survey was conducted among Sony WebTV Network(TM)users. More than 7,600 people, all of whom were TV Online subscribers at the time, responded to the survey.tvonlinemag.com
