Barrons excerpt:

"Personal computers still are something of a thorn in Big Blue's side. The company lost close to $1 billion on the unit last year because of competition and price wars. However, the PC division showed strong improvement in this year's first quarter, buoyed by sales of laptops and small computer servers (the latter run on Intel chips and Microsoft's Windows operating system). The unit's pre-tax loss was $89 million versus red ink of $458 million a year ago. Sales increased by 50%. IBM, the No.3 laptop maker, thus is gaining market share from No. 1 Toshiba and No. 2 Compaq. CEO Louis V. Gerstner Jr. said IBM "will continue to give a substantial amount of attention" to its PC unit, which he predicted "will make some money going forward."
