MP3 and Music Labels:

The Music Labels dislike MP3 and will not favor that format irrespective of security being incorporated into this. The installed base for MP3 will continue but not have the growth that formats approved by the Music Labels will show.

The real tap dance that we're going to see played out is the courtship of the ML's at the SDMI. I expect RNWK and Lucent to announce some type of agreement or understanding with 1 or more of these ML's. Currently Time Warner may be the first, based on E.Bleier's recent board placement with RNWK.

Lucent has done an excellent job in bringing together the various forces needed to get their system accepted. The announcements this week will demonstrate this and every other 'player' in this industry will rush to get some announcement out showing their achievements. Carefully watch to see which, if any, labels go with the others.

I predict that over the next few months the dimming of MP3 as an acceptable format for the top recording artists will become more apparent.

eDig should have a much more amazing week starting in May.

my understanding is that edig will support all compression models including mp3 which probably has less compression and is more boom box quality - edig/lu/txn appear to have put together the top companies to include most of the recording co's in support of epac - great sound, standardization and security - IMO
