Howdy Blue, looks like you're on another autocode level than us with AOL by now, as you've given 'em plenty of reason to know better than to spam any non-replies to BLUE's email ;o) It's wonderful you're able to effect talking to people who can make some real decisions about getting the scriptwriters of hatethink like Howeird out of the mainstream of the American Experience. Blue, I wouldn't know how to get through to the people you talk to so easily so I wouldn't even try. KUDOS to you, and to all doing something pointing in a good direction from all points and wherever. This contemplative weekend is most likely the same countrywide for so many families infected by this terrible epidemic of school violence. And from all directions there's much talk of outrage about the recent remarks of Howard Stern who lost his teen fans forever once they heard those filthy comments of his. Stern read a letter on the radio that said his remarks were cut & paste out of their context (wunnerwhy so careful not to say it himself, hmmmm?)... If so, why so many and especially teenagers who heard this show that morning so offended by them? Seven weeks yet to go til summer vacation... that's too long a time to keep this up....my idea is - Close Middle & Highschools Early Now. Students do last semester work at home, teachers available all day by phone, other arrangements made to accommodate parental hardship and/or teens needing close supervision, And - cooperation from corporations and workplaces to meet the emergency is a mandate. IMHO (yes, that's why I'm not the President but...) this could be a better chance to make lemonade from the lemon given, than to chance the present environment at risk an opportunity to escalate between now and summer to further tragedy, trauma, and hysteria. MauriceElias, professor of psychology at Rutgers State University and writer of a book about parenting, makes some sense of it "For some, it's a prank to threaten to destroy a school. Others are merely trying to copy what they see in the media." Primarily Elias said the threats represent teenage rebellion against the stress and pressure of school life. With schools so focused on test scores and with parents placing so much emphasis on success, he said, students feel caught in a pressure cooker that is now showing signs of exploding. "For every kid that acts on their feelings, you can be sure there are plenty of kids in the school who feel the same," Elias said. "And when you see it all over the country, that's also a clue that there is a structural problem in the relationship between the schools and students." The pressure cooker association is what made me think of possibility Why Not Close The Schools Til September. If the lid might be about to blow, the sensible thing to do is take it off the stove and let it cool down. And it gives the experts more time to discuss, identify, and implement ideas for A Fresh Start next year. Thanks pals for sharing thoughts and hopes for a better world, Joan
