I was once at a "glass tasting". A big new wine and a big old wine were used to evaluate a variety of glasses, including two Riedel designs, the "Impitoyable" glass (which is an almost closed snifter), a generic drugstore stem glass - and just for kicks one of those awful shallow champagne glasses.
The wines were quite different from glass to glass.
For red wine and even an old Champagne I favor the Riedel "Vintage Port" glass - a smallish stem piece halfway between a goblet and a flute.
