From that article:
A ballpark average (provided reluctantly) for throughput to the Internet would be 500Kbps down and 128Kbps up. For accesses within the cable network, the ballpark average throughput would be 1.5 Mbps downstream and 500Kbps upstream
This is the first time I've found someone to even take a rough estimate of overall throughput to the Internet. It goes to my point about the how the cable ISP's (@home) have an advantage in becoming content sources.

Does anyone know if there are any studies showing an "average" or even "typical" sustained throughput (not bursts) through the "internet" (whatever that is really). What I know is that there are plenty of times I cant even fill my 56k modem on a sustained basis, though I have no hard proof as to why.
