Victor -
Most people close to the company, both inside and outside, with whom I have discussed this matter think that Rose was the real architect of the "enterprise strategy". There is little doubt that it was a well thought out and visionary plan. What has been missing is execution.

If we see a rapid closure on the implementation of that strategy in the next few months, we can assume that Rose was hamstrung by his boss and that with Rosen's backing the plan will come to fruition. If that happens Rose would get my vote - no one else in the industry, including Michael Dell, has done anywhere near as good a job of identifying where the industry would shift, and what would be the resources needed to succeed in that new world. Dell is only beginning to attack that problem, and they have the advantage of being able to look down the road to Houston and see some of the problems they will be facing in the next few years.

If on the other hand what we see at CPQ's enterprise group over the next six months is more of the same - lackluster performance of the "legacy" businesses; no leverage of the key technologies acquired with Tandem and DEC in CPQ's mainstream business; too many overlapping or competing product lines with no overarching product story; continued confusion in the field over what products to sell, how, when and to whom; and confusing, "shotgun" partnering strategies which require CPQ to be all things to all people, then we can conclude that Rose's reach exceeded his grasp and that he was part of the problem.

I would like to see a few strong players emerge from the mist at CPQ. I frankly see few great visionaries in the industry at the moment, and CPQ management used to be considered the gold standard. I will be watching the festivities with great interest over the near term.
