then cable has no advantage if cable also depends exclusively on the backbone.

You are missing the point. Cable does NOT depend exclusively on the backbone. It provides increased spead from the backbone to home. The backbone bandwidth will expand as infrastructure is put in place to relieve the pressure. We still get better speed, and I believe, faster than xDSL.

Dial up prices need to come down to compete with broadband. I will be paying $40/mo for ATHM. That includes cable modem, ISP, and avoids the use of an additional phone line. And I anticpate a great internet experience to boot.

ATHM is much more than an ISP. It is a fat pipe to the internet!

Do you have @home, or have you used anyone's computer that has @home. If your answer is yes I'm surprised at "hope" in your last post. If you could get on @home I'm sure your doughts would be set to rest. The only question I have is the worry that some of the past post have. I have owned @home for well over a year and have used the service for over 18 months. My only regret is that I was so stupid as to use something that long, without buying into it sooner. At one point I had to put another phone line in so I could get faxes and other calls with out the bother. Which I don't need to tell you was not to cheap. Boy was I a happy camper I could sit and wait during peak times to wait and get on AOL, then shuffle through the CONTENT, and still talk on the phone, which was really great during the times when I was disconnected. I can only say that you have a great stock and if you hold it and it does half as good as AOL you will all be happy.
