Dave,

I've found win95 screensaver and standby modes to be a source of problems. That's the first thing I'd try: turn that stuff off and see if it still happens.

Dave, I was having somewhat the same problem couple weeks ago and mr.mark suggested adjusting Hardware Acceleration, which I did and working OK now. Not to say yours will.

Right click MY Computer
Click Properties
Click Performance
Click Graphics

Now you have a slider bar (Hardware Accelerator) None to Full. Move the slider to NONE and OK your way out. If this clears it up you may want to go back and slowly move slider back toward FULL. ( I left mine at 1/2. Seems to work OK.

I used to have this problem until i disabled the find fast option in teh control panel
