But that's not eMachines' target market.

eMachines is targeting the consumer appliance market segment, i.e. price points around $500.

Their consumer marketing knowledge is impressive.
They're very aware the average USA household income is in the mid-30k range; they know the buying patterns associated with different demographic income levels. And $1K is a lot of money for a family on a household gross income of $30k.

eMachines is an entry onto the Internet for consumers who previously could not afford a PC. These are first time buyers who want to read email and surf the Internet.

But your point about quality/reliability/service holds true for consumer households who have the ability to pay for these.
