Edwarda--Regarding your suggestion as to other holidays that we could celebrate. The Aztecs had one I believe was for the summer solstice.
The Spaniards reported an interesting sort of race that was a feature of the ceremonies. It seems a number of maidens were given a head start and then a number of youths would take off in pursuit. If a lad succeeded in catching one he would reportedly grab her and "enjoy her on the spot". What ever that means.
