>As Grayson (Pentagon official) pointed out, Albright demonized the Serbs making it almost impossible to sit down and negotiate with them. This demonization of an entire group of people is not unlike Natzi germany's demonization of the Jews.<

Absolutley, and I agree with Ms. Allbright. Bright cookie that she is; she and a host of other enlightened individuals (including President Clinton:GOD bless him) have nipped this potential, planetary, historical repeat, screw-up in the bud and said full stop to the slimy tadpole soon to be full-blown ugly lizard with a tail one just keeps pulling off. Lizards tails grow back OH SO SLOWLY.

That demonization is what every prince or king, every state or nation, has done in order to compel the masses into supporting their whims, desires or compulsions.

Throughout history, there have been power-mongers. There are people who are not content controlling their own lives, but are driven to control the lives of others. (Ironically, it often seems that these people actually have an unusually poor ability to control their own lives, but that's another subject). And throughout history, these people, once in control, often eventually feel a desire or a need to wage war. They might want to do this to expand their territory, or to stop a rival power-monger from expanding his territory, or simply for self-aggrandizement. For whatever reason, the power-monger often decides that it is in his best interest to fight this rival power-monger over here. But that isn't the way that it happens. What happens is that the power-monger gets his people (us) to fight the rival power-monger's people (them). But the power-monger recognizes, at least subconsciously, that generally we don't have a beef with them. Rather, the power-monger has a beef with the rival power-monger. So in order to get us to do his fighting for him, the power-monger has to convince us that they are evil bad people. And often, because we generally don't really know any of them, the power-monger succeeds in demonizing them and we go jauntily off to war.

This is really all too easy to do, because we always have a them. In my own case, we are the people, and they are the government. But if I trusted the government, if I didn't see them for the power-mongers they are, then my we would be the entire nation, power-mongers and all, and my them would have to be somebody else, some other nation and its people. I'd be primed and just waiting for the power-mongers to tell me how evil they are, so that I'd know who to be against and why.

And I might even go jauntily off to war.

James---A little over the top, but it is true that we have made further negotiation needlessly difficult....

Every belief system doesn't need a God, but it definitely does need a devil. Macchiavelli and Mencken knew this well.
