Jim, a really great post! But...

"There is no real wealth but the labor of man.
Were the mountains of gold and the valleys of silver,
the world would not be one grain of corn the richer;
nor one comfort would be added to the human race."
:Percy Bysshe Shelly (1792 - 1822, English writer)

If this is true, why is it that every time I see a clear-cut of old growth forest, I feel less wealthy? Every time I see a strip mine that obliterates my favorite trout stream, I feel stripped myself?

Sorry, Jim. I think that's old thinking. Wealth in our world is far more than what lies in the hands of man. If we can't begin to think differently, then I sorrow for our children's futures.

"While I'm at it the market is often refereed to as a zero sum game
however it's less than that, while people tend to look at an
exchange as having two sides buy/sell they over look the cost
the over head of the market requires more willing buyers than
sellers"

You are very right here. I was actually about to post an amendment which says the same thing. I liken it to the hours I have spent playing casino 7-card stud. After 20 hours with all the same players, we knew that the net wealth on the table had shriveled, and the wealth in the house's box had grown. In casino poker, you don't play against the house. They just take a pre-determined cut for every pot. All of us "regulars" played a net-sum-lose game against each other. It was when the new guy (usually half loaded)with a pocket full of winnings from the craps table came in, that we began to lick our chops, and stay past the third card. Sound familiar?

"Let so much as 5% of investors in the stock market try to
get their money out of it at any one time and the Ponzi effect
will show it's true colors."

Sort of makes you wonder what's going to happen when 5% get scared about Y2K and decide to cash up their IRAs? Say about November, when they can roll-over after Y2K, but within 60 days, to avoid penalty. All us smart people just know that Y2K will be fixed..no problem. Do they?
