Internet stocks were roughed up last week in one of those bouts of disillusionment the market suffers from time to time, especially with high-tech stocks. Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) tumbled from $221.25 to $165 in two days, and America Online Inc. (AOL) fell from $162 to $130 in three.

The "I told you so" crowd was delighted. But while it's easy to make fun of Internet stocks, the joke so far has been on the jokesters. Despite the recent downturn, the Interactive Week index of 50 Net stocks has more than tripled in the past 12 months.
