cc, I think the nearest one is Komshatta (sp), LA. I've never been there. I prefer Baden Baden, but I will gamble in Las Vegas or the Caribbean if I am already there. But river boats turn me off. We have a dog track at La Porte, on the Gulf Freeway toward Galveston. And Sam Houston Race Park off the Tollway in North Houston is the place for thoroughbreds and quarter horses. I don't play dogs, so you have to ask somebody else. If I were starting out today, I would attend one of the seminars they give before the races at Sam Houston. Then, I would buy a few books. the main thing, IMHO, is learning what all the abbreviations on the programs and racing form mean. No <g>
