The Book of Five Rings
or
The Book of the Void

What is called the spirit of the void is where there is nothing. It is not included in man's knowledge. Of course the void is nothingness. By knowing things that exist, you can know that which does not exist. That is the void.

People in this world look at things mistakenly, and think that what they do not understand must be the void. This is not the true void. It is bewilderment.

The Ni To Ichi Way of strategy.

"Bunbu Itchi"
or
"Pen and sword in accord"

There is the Way of salvation by the law of Buddha, the Way of Confucius governing the Way of learning, the Way of healing as a doctor, as a poet teaching the Way of Waka.

Waka
The thirty-one syllable poem. The word means "Song in Harmony".

tachi
or
katana

Men of superior strength in the world can wield even a long sword lightly, so there is no case for their liking the short sword. They also make use of the length of spears and halberds. Some men use a shorter long sword with the intention of jumping in and stabbing the enemy at the unguarded moment when he flourishes his sword. This inclination is bad.

The Way of strategy is straight and true. You must chase the enemy around and make him obey your spirit.

I'm telling ya, buddy, I wouldn't want to have you on the other team.

That Freud thing cracked me up. Watch, they might use it. Makes about as much sense as the current tactics.

No way could somebody write this as a script. Well, Tarantino maybe.
Speaking of which, I watched Pulp Fiction again last night. Every time I watch it, I get something new. Last night it was the explanation of how the gold watch made it through the war. These people are good actors. I'm not sure how long it would take me to read that dialog and not start laughing.

Bookends/Clausewitz/Project Gutenberg

marcos, thanks for the info. I'll take a look at Clausewitz. I looked for Griffith's translation on the net, but could not find it either. Since I have numerous bookcases full of books in my personal library, I can always use a couple of new bookends. <g> I also agree about Project Gutenberg. I have downloaded numerous copies of the classics from there and carried them around on my palmtop computer to read during travels (e.g., War of the Worlds, Island of Dr. Moreau). I carried around Giles' translation of Sun Tzu for a couple of months, too. Thanks again.
