<So is this ability to wring out twice the throughput for a given clock speed the essence of Rambus' advantage? In other words, is this the core of the Rambus promise that has so many excited about Rambus' potential?>

Not really. The double-pumping of data is possible in a lot of scenarios. Even SDRAM can use this trick and double the throughput, which is exactly what DDR SDRAM will do. If that's all there is to Rambus, then there would be no clear reason to switch from SDRAM to RDRAM.

The other two advantages of RDRAM is low-pin count and more efficient use of bandwidth. And those are the two advantages that won't be showing up in any form of SDRAM.
