>>I don't think CD-R's are impervious to failure. Last week I rented the "Mask of Zorro" on it's sister format, DVD....<<

I personally have little experience with DVD. All I can say is that I have never had a recovery error when reading from CD-R/W back to hard drive to continue work on a project.

It's possible that your rental DVD disk was subject to the typical abuse that all rental items must endure. Almost every VHS tape I rent has at least a couple of dropouts and/or unwatchable parts due to previous abuse. Can you imagine the reliability of an item like a Zip drive if they were also rental items?

It's not really fair to compare rental items with your personally owned ones.
