Penni, just want to correct a misperception. I was not complaining about Terrence's behavior to me personally. In fact, I have nothing to complain about at all, in that respect. His barbs were directed at other people.

One of the problems that I see on SI (and here I am NOT talking about Terrence), is that when Person A is attacked by Person B, the rest of the people on the thread often look away, just as people in a subway car generally pretend not to notice when one passenger in the car is being harassed by another. (LeRoy Jones -- now ? Baraka -- once wrote a viciously funny one-act play about such an incident.)

Edit(Paragraph left out, for some reason): If Person A tries to defend himself, he often sounds flustered and pompous, and more often than not, he ends up being the one slapped on the wrist by SI. If he chooses to ignore the attack, to be "above it", then Person B thinks he has "won", and proceeds to harass someone else, and then someone else, and then someone else...Here, the other members of the audience have to stand up and speak out, or else this sort of behavior will continue indefinitely.

EV is something of a special case, because he does not harass individuals (at least, not usually), but rather a whole group of individuals. And those of us who have not lost family members in Nazi concentration camps (or the equivalent) should perhaps be more comprehending of the outrage his posts evoke in those who have.

Joan

Dear Penni,

I knew you weren't thinking about the Evil One in your posting this morning. It was quite clear that you had people like Terry in mind. I too thought that Coby was a bit hard on FT's dealings with jbe, but she rarely lets him get away with his dotty hit-and-run tactics. jbe is a very intelligent and learned person and I shouldn't want to be on the wrong side of a debate with her. She also has a sense of humor and I feel no qualms about her ability to handle FT when he becomes rambunctious, if she chooses.

As I noted earlier, I quite like Terry. He can be thought provoking, he can be an inspired duelist, he can be a most welcome leavening, and at times he can be a royal pain in the a**. I miss his contributions when he is away and I have plenty of reason to know what a thoroughly decent person he is.

I also like Chuzz very much. He is a very different soul and I can easily understand why he would find Terry a bit off-putting. Their styles are nearly diametrically opposed. I hope that in time they can appreciate each other, since one always hopes that one's friends will enjoy each other. If not, they are both intelligent and sensible people; they will stay out of each other's way, I feel sure. As you point out, one can always pick and choose among the conversation clusters at this thread; there are certainly enough of them and they surely keep moving!

Thanks for dropping Rambi's Uzi and being dear penni for a moment!

Penni, I added an "edit" to my preceding post to you (whole paragraph inadvertently admitted), just in case you have read it already.

Incidentally, I really liked your earlier post about the history/evolution of this thread. Will get back to it when I have time.

Joan
