I will speak to my point of view. Maybe Jan can comment. This is NOT momentum trading. Just the opposite. It is contrarian trading. The only reason we pay attention to momentum is to see where it has exhausted itself, and trade against it.

So if you see AOL go up 7 points in the first 10 minutes, DO NOT BUY. Wait to see if it looks like it is slowing, and short it. Similarly, if it drops a few points during the first few hours, then buy.

This is a very simplistic explanation, and each stock has its own rhythm and pattern. The one thing that makes this trading treacherous is when a stock starts on a trend. Then momentum trading is the way to go. I don't like that though, because it feels like running with the herd.
