I am in the dark on that one. The recent marketing re-alignment which put Pesatori into a new role along with Barth and Blackmore makes him one of the geo barrons but pretty much takes him out of the running for the CEO position. Rose might still have a shot if he can get some real traction in the next few months and show that he was unable to execute because of his boss. There's no other internal candidate.

An outsider would not have the in-depth knowledge of how the "CPQ machine" works which Rose brings to the table, so he would have to have name recognition, great general management skills and be a charismatic leader. Not too many of the people being bandied about in the press fill that bill. Rick Belluzzo was an early front-runner but some behind the scenes gossip says that he did not really do a great job with HP's computer business - he was on the watch that committed to Intel and Merced for HP's PA-RISC replacement, which has not turned out too well, and the PC business was weak. Some say that getting canned by Lew Platt was the only thing that saved Belluzzo's reputation.

There are many strong players in the technology game but most of them have a pretty good horse to ride at the moment. CSCO's Chambers is very strong, but would he leave his current rocket ride to take a shot at the big time? Oracle's Ray Lane is a strong manager but not too charismatic. And so on...

So I think that it will come down to someone outside of the computer business, probably outside of the tech business, if Rose doesn't get the nod.
