Good points.

Our attitude toward pre-60s violence is sort of like our attitude toward domestic violence. We pretend it is a new phenomenon because we only started talking about it as a problem, what, about 20 years ago? In fact, it's been a part of Western culture (and as far as I know world culture) for thousands (tens of thousands?) of years. But we suddenly give it a name and say "how terrible, look at this problem" as though we invented it.
