I obviously don't know if Luther did or didn't, but it does make a good story. Not that the event was, in itself, that significant: if it hadn't been him, it would have been someone else. The reformation was less action than reaction, a consequence of the rapidly deteriorating quality of leadership of the Catholic Church.

Difficult to differentiate between religious and political aspects of the Reformation; the two were inextricably linked.
