Industrial distributors, such as Pioneer-Standard Electronics Inc., Avnet Inc. and
Gates/Arrow Distributing Inc., continue to sell Compaq's more complex storage
product set, but the vendor wants to penetrate the departmental customers, said
Rick Nagengast, director of North American storage marketing at Compaq.

"We wanted to engage new channel partners by having accreditation and
certification for VARs to really go after the midrange space," Nagengast said..................................................

HDS has created Freedom Data Networks, an open framework that lets users
connect storage components from multiple vendors with its servers, subsystems,
and adapters across NT, Unix, and OS/390 environments. It has built an
interoperability lab to test compatibility of its products with third-party devices
and refocused its services division to help customers with SAN installations, risk
analysis, and readiness.

Farid Neema, an analyst with Peripheral Concepts, explains the surge in
networked storage activity this way: "If vendors don't talk about network
storage today, customers will turn to the competitors who have clear strategies."......
