Headline: BEFORE THE BELL - VLSI (NASDAQ:VLSI) on the rise

NEW YORK, May 3 (Reuters) - Shares in VLSI Technology Inc.
rose in pre-opening trade Monday after the Netherlands' Philips
Electronics (AMS:PHG) (NYSE:PHG) raised its bid for the computer
chip maker.
VLSI was up at 20-23/32 on the Instinet electronic broker
system from an 18-14/16 Friday close. Philips' American
Depositary Receipts were not active.
The companies said Monday that Philips had raised its bid
for VLSI to $21 a share from an initial offer of $17. Analysts
said the takeover bid was an important technological step for
Philips.
Among other active issues, MediaOne Group Inc. (NYSE:UMG) was
down slightly at 81-1/2 from an 81-9/16 close after sources
said the cable company had accepted AT&T Corp.'s (NYSE:T) $58
billion cash-and-stock takeover bid.
AT&T was up at 51-1/2 from a close of 50-8/16. Rival bidder
Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ:CMCSA) was not active.
Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) slipped to
168-1/2 from a close of 172-1/16. Biotech company Centocor
Inc.(NASDAQ:CNTO) rose to 48-1/4 from a close of 44-6/16.
