I think most people support "buying" music from their favorite artist's rather than "stealing" it.

I wish that were true. . .but in certain demographics, it is not. Remember that kids are the life blood to the record industry. . .teenagers. . . and to get them to be socially responsible enough to make a CHOICE not to download, but rather spend their money on a record they haven't heard yet. . that is hard.

Also, by choosing which songs you like best and making custom CDs, it takes out the depth of the market. . .that will benefit the largest artists with the biggest hits and hurt the smaller lesser known artists. Many argue that MP3 benefits the lesser known artists. . .in the near-term that may be true. . .but in the longer-term, I see it having exactly the opposite effect. Who has time to sift thru hundreds of thousands of titles and downloading samples of unknowns. . .I think it will make it much much harder for lesser known artists to compete. . . . and the biggest hits will be even bigger than ever, as they are "selected" more often for inclusion on custom CDs and for direct delivery. . . .The problem is that everything will change SO much from where it is now, that most people can't see what the long term effects might be.

I agree with your statement, with regard to responsible listenters, but if you were to ask a college kid that is walking around with a Diamond MP3 player, whether he stole anything, I think the answer would be an emphatic "no way, man."
