This is a quote from Sunday's Barrons on a SEG recommendation. "The shift from analog to digital, combined with dramatic increases in bandwidth, provides the means to transmit, store and retrieve larger and larger amounts of data." I'm glad to see the DD industry is finally the recipient of the benefits from increased bandwidth. Communication stocks I follow (but do not own) have gone up from 100% to 150% in the last six months on the hype of the coming bandwidth increases. Conference calls by DD and component makers have eluded to the coming changes as the needs for technological advances they are working on. I am seeing more and more on DSL expansion and cable modem expansions as new fiber networks are expanding the backbone of communications. I think we have good things ahead.

I do not know the storage requirements of a two minute song but I have one music video song that requires just short of 35mb. I think music only and compression technology will reduce those requirements. However, I have a stack of CD's about 4 feet high and my kids have way more than I do. I think my 8.4gb drive is beginning to look small.

Z, I have converted at least 80 cds from .WAV format to .MP3 so that I could use the Diamond MusicMatch Jukebox 3 software and store all of my music. It takes up approximately 4.5 gigs of space in .MP3 format and I purchased a WDC 10gig hard drive solely for the purpose of filling the rest of the drive with music. I have also taken the 4.5 gigs of music in .MP3 and burned them onto seven CD-Rs. They are portable as is the 10gig music hdd that I purchased. Recently, I purchased a Quantum 13gig BigFoot drive to store a digital picture archive that I can utilize for various multimedia and website development purposes. Imagine how many people might be doing the same thing and have the same perspective as I do for storage and disk drive usage. I think the number of folks doing what I've done is probably smaller, but it may increase and may not be caught in the reported numbers for hdd units sold over the next few years (I am assuming this is true, and haven't consulted any numbers). Just something to think about. I'm still waiting for the some kind of announcements that would allow me to take a music-filled hard drive and plug it into a socket in my car--hence replacing my current stereo system. I think one of the main reasons that I haven't seen this yet is due to the lack of perceived market demand. Anyhow, I've said enough.

Cheers!

-Will

Most songs take like 2 to 5 megs. The problem's not the storage. The problem is acquisition, either by patiently downloading the stuff off the web or patiently ripping your CDs. Like all progress in tech nowadays, everybody's waiting for Godot, eh, broadband...
