Yeah, it's hard to get concrete phone sales numbers, since none of the manufacturers reveal the break-down between different standards. Haven't seen the cost comparisons. I'm not sure that's a crucial issue - operators aren't going to switch into a different standard because the data solutions might be cheaper there, no matter which standard offers cheapest data. It's still such a small part of running a network.

GSM can probably reach bigger economies of scale for GPRS than TDMA or CDMA for their upgrades. I don't think that's going to help GSM much - it now all depends on how fast smartphones take off in the markets with old networks. If these data features are a hit with the current 14 000 bps then there is a lot of momentum to boost the transmission rates. If WAP flops in existing networks the operators may get antsy.
