Larry, I believe it was you who raisedthe question of cellular to laptop the other day?

We are about to take off for our yearly safari to Vermont, and I'd like to get wireless modemized before we set off. 3com advertises a "Cellular Faxmodem PC Card (direct connect Cellular for access via your cellular phone)". So in my ignorance I went to the local Radio Shack which fronts for PCS and Bellsouth. The experts there told me that the modem/cell phone technology won't be available for months.

To make a long story short, what have you discovered about cellular modems? Do they work with all services?

I'm beginning to think the cell phone industry's marketing philosophy is founded on customer ignorance. The AT&T store said they could sell me a phone with modem capabilities, but the adapter and cable cost 140 bucks and the modem over $300 for 28.8k capability. 3com's v.90 cell card costs 199, but nobody, including the 3com web site, can reassure me it will work with whatever cellular service I buy.

Any response will be most appreciated.
