It is fine for an event to be galvanizing, but the truth is that only there are underlying assumptions that inhibit appropriate responses, and that the philosophical gaps are often not so easily bridged. There is, for example, a fundamental disagreement between those of us who think that children are basically savages who must be civilized, and those who think that they are basically angels whom society corrupts. The call to put ideology aside is of limited utility...
