Sigma Designs Announces Single-Chip REALmagic DVD/MPEG-2 Decoder to Accompany Intel 752 Graphics Accelerator Sigma Designs Announces Single-Chip REALmagic DVD/MPEG-2 Decoder to Accompany Intel 752 Graphics Accelerator MILPITAS, CALIF. (April 27) BUSINESS WIRE -April 27, 1999--Sigma Designs, Inc. (Nasdaq:SIGM), a recognized leader in digital video solutions for personal computers, today announced that its EM8220 REALmagic DVD chip provides full DVD playback support for Intel(R) (Nasdaq:INTC) 752 graphics accelerator-based add-in cards. Sigma Designs will provide a "daughter card" to accompany the Intel 752 graphics accelerator, as well as a reference design for an integrated card, providing the Intel 752 graphics accelerator and Sigma's DVD silicon on one card. "Sigma has established itself as a technology and quality leader in the DVD/MPEG market and has long been a driving force behind advancement of MPEG technology," commented Bob Gregory, Marketing Director for the Intel Graphics Components division. "REALmagic EM8220's support for the Intel(R) 752 graphics accelerator is the latest demonstration that Sigma continues to leverage its technology leadership to meet the growing needs of this dynamic market to provide superior DVD picture quality on PCs/TVs." "We are delighted to provide EM8220 DVD decoder support for the Intel(R) 752 graphics accelerator," stated William K. Wong, Sigma's vice president of marketing. "The advantages of hardware silicon for DVD decoding include uncompromised support for interactive gaming, scaling from thumb-nail to full-screen display, DTS audio, and TV-out display. Our partners tell us that software DVD is fraught with compatibility issues." "Using hardware DVD silicon ensures multitasking video display with no stuttering and VGA compatibility," Wong continued. "The load on the PCI bus from other applications, such as database software, does not compromise video display. And if the user upgrades the system -- by buying a new sound card, for example -- continued DVD decoding compatibility is assured." The advantages of the integrated card reference design are that one PCI slot is saved, and the integrated technology provides TV-out DVD display along with Dolby Digital/AC3 audio. Software driver support includes Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 95/98 and NT 4.0. Microsoft Windows 2000 support and WHQL approval are planned for the third quarter of 1999. Samples of the EM8220 are available at $35 per piece in OEM quantities.
