Ericsson, Symbol Technologies team up in sales
STOCKHOLM, May 3 (Reuters) - Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson and Symbol Technologies Inc (SBL - news), a U.S. maker of hand-held communication devices, announced on Monday a partnership to sell wireless data and telecom devices.

The deal is a further move in Ericsson's drive to build up Internet-based services following last month's acquisition of two other U.S. firms, Torrent Networking Technologies, and TouchWave Inc, for nearly $500 million.

Ericsson and Symbol Technologies will market and share technology to deliver wireless LAN (Local Area Network)-based telephony and data solutions for a single networking platform.

The Ericsson/Symbol partnership will target a market where communication services and applications are offered over an Internet-based single network infrastructure for both fixed and mobile users.

''Ericsson and Symbol will bring together a family of products and a partnership distribution channel that will allow corporate management to view data and telephony as a common resource,'' said Haijo Pietersma, executive vice president of enterprise solutions at Ericsson.

Ericsson and Symbol will share technologies, jointly develop common technology platforms and develop customer solutions based on Internet technology, Ericsson said in a statement.

Ericsson shares closed up 9.5 crowns at 231 in a positive market.
