No, it isn't a straw man at all, because it is used only to point out that the 2nd Amendment has limitations that we all recognize and live with.

It is an inverted slippery slope. The point ought to be clear: we accept some limitations on our personal rights -- it isn't an all or nothing argument. The question is where the line should be drawn. I contend that the line should be drawn at the point where the benefits and the costs are equal. That is, the benefits (if any) in terms of lives lost vs. the costs in terms of economic costs, cost of loss personal freedom, etc. need to be balanced.

Please note that I have not drawn any conclusions -- I am simply trying to provide a rational context for the discussion.
